Guess who won a book from GoodReads!!!

I'm the type of person who never wins anything.  Especially when it comes to contests based on luck.

But guess what, readers? I won a book from GoodReads!  That e-mail in my inbox literally made my day.

The book is Up Against It by M.J. Locke.

Here is the synopsis (from GoodReads)Geoff and his friends live in Phocaea, a distant asteroid colony on the Solar System's frontier. They're your basic high-spirited young adults, enjoying such pastimes as hacking matter compilers to produce dancing skeletons that prance through the low-gee communal areas, using their rocket-bikes to salvage methane ice shrapnel that flies away when the colony brings in a big (and vital) rock of the stuff, and figuring out how to avoid the ubiquitous surveillance motes that are the million eyes of 'Stroiders, a reality-TV show whose Earthside producers have paid handsomely for the privilege of spying on every detail of the Phocaeans' lives.

Life isn’t as good as it seems, though. A mysterious act of sabotage kills Geoff's brother Carl and puts the entire colony at risk. And in short order, we discover that the whole thing may have been cooked up by the Martian mafia, as a means of executing a coup and turning Phocaea into a client-state. As if that wasn't bad enough, there's a rogue AI that was spawned during the industrial emergency and slipped through the distracted safeguards, and a giant x-factor in the form of the Viridians, a transhumanist cult that lives in Phocaea's bowels.

In addition to Geoff, our story revolves around Jane, the colony's resource manager -- a bureaucrat engineer in charge of keeping the plumbing running on an artificial island of humanity poised on the knife-edge of hard vacuum and unforgiving space. She's more than a century old, and good at her job, but she is torn between the technical demands of the colony and the political realities of her situation, in which the fishbowl effect of 'Stroiders is compounded by a reputation economy that turns every person into a beauty contest competitor.  Her manoeuverings to keep politics and engineering in harmony are the heart of the book.

It definitely seems pretty interesting, and I love a good science-fiction read.

I look forward to reviewing it for you!

Happy Reading!

City of Ashes by Cassandra Clare (The Mortal Instruments, Book 2)

Let me first preface this review by saying this is my first read of The Mortal Instruments. I have been watching a ton of YouTube reviews and reading a ton of blogs. Many people who love my favorite books also love this series. They even rank it up among my favorite series, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games. Seeing how much people loved it, some even more than some of my favorites, I knew I had to read them. Needless to say, my expectations were pretty high.

So...

WOW. What can I say?

The Mortal Instruments started off with City of Bones, which was fantastic. I didn't really think it was going to get any better from there. I actually expected CoA to be worse or at least just the same.

But...

WOW. It was fantastic. I loved this even more the City of Bones. I loved the world building in this novel - especially the scenes in the faerie court even though it was oh so heart breaking.

There were just so many things I loved about this book. Cassandra Clare can definitely write a good story. But for those of you who haven't read it yet? Beware. The tension in this book is so thick, I could feel it.

And that end? Can we say cliffhanger? And, poor Clary. (I have a theory that might help her, though.)

Now onto City of Glass. (and really NOW! I want/need some resolution).

5/5 Stars. Fantastic!

An Introduction!

Hi, everyone! I've been watching an excessive number of book reviews on YouTube, and I decided I wanted to join in.

There. That's me in the middle.

The  problem? I'm incredibly awkward in front of a camera.

The solution? Blogging my reviews on this site.

I thought I would start off my blog with an introduction, so here it is.  My name is Caryn, and I'm 21 years old.  I just graduated from college with degrees in Biology and Wildlife Science (in other words - not another English major doing book reviews!). In the fall, I will be starting veterinary school, hence my blog's name: Bookish DVM To Be.

Although my background is in the sciences - most of the books I read are young adult fiction novels.  I love anything fantasy, science-fiction, and dystopian.  Besides books, I have an unhealthly obsession with animal print, apple products, my Kindle and indie rock.

I can't wait to get involved with the book community! In the mean time, you can find me on good reads:
